Moving into a dorm is an exciting and new experience, one that introduces you, first hand to the world of college life. Dormitories across the country each have their own unique style and structure.  Moving into one can sometimes feel a little intimidating, especially if you are starting college for the first time, or experiencing living in a dorm for the first time. Either way, dorm life can be a great experience, one that will leave you with many, cherished and fond memories of your college years.

To help you adjust to your new place of residence over the next several semesters, here are a few SMART tips that will help you as you prepare to move into a dorm.

SMART Tip 1: Do Your Research

Knowing exactly what you can and cannot move into a dorm will help you out a lot prior to moving into a dorm. Dormitories have special rules and guidelines to follow and it is important to make sure that you are aware of what they are. Before you move in, obtain a list of all of the acceptable items you can bring with you, and what you must leave behind. A good tip is to think about the seasons and semesters. If you are moving into a dorm in the fall of the year, chances are you will want to pack clothing and items that are more suited for the weather changes that will occur throughout the fall, as well as preparation for going into the winter. You can always bring additional items with you later once you get a feel for how your particular dorm operates, but it is always better to consider beforehand what the rules are.

If you are going to move into a dorm and acquire a roommate, consult your roommate and see what he or she is bringing to move into the dorm. This will not only give you guidance and an idea of whether or not you are on the right track with your own moving, but also help you to streamline your packing so that you will not move in too much or too little. Research will help you in the long run, and help you to have a smooth moving process into the dorm.

SMART Tip 2: Pack Effectively

Packing up your items to move into a dorm still requires a certain level of protection to endure travel and transport from where you are moving from. If you have breakable items, be sure to secure them with proper bubble wrap or protective padding so that you can ensure that they will not break before you are able to move into the dorm.

If you will be bringing dishes, mugs, cups or glassware, be sure to check with your dorm first to make sure you are allowed to bring those items and that you will have a place to be able to clean them. If so, you will want to make sure you pack them well, so that they too will make it through the transportation process without breaking or cracking.

SMART Tip 3: Bring Items With You That Remind You of Home

Having reminders of home is a great way to add a sense of comfort to your dorm experience, especially if you are moving away for the first time, and dorm life is a huge adjustment for you. Simply putting out a family photo or adding a touch of home to your dorm can help you to settle in a little more quickly, and remind you of your family, friends and loved ones back home.

By following these basic tips, we hope that your move into your dorm will be a great and memorable experience, and for additional moving tips, as well as moving resources, please visit our Moving page.
